Fauci Lashes Out at Rand Paul, Pleads the Fifth in Tense Senate Hearing

Dr. Anthony Fauci faced Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and almost immediately stopped providing answers. Subpoenaed to discuss his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the virus’s origins, Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly.

In his opening statement he made the conflict personal. “The sole reason (Sen. Paul) is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, ‘behind bars,’” Fauci said. He described the proceeding as a politically motivated effort to trap him into statements that could be used for criminal charges.

Paul highlighted the extent of the refusal, noting for the record that Fauci would not even confirm whether a folder sat in front of him. The exchange marked the first time in more than 250 congressional appearances that Fauci had claimed the Fifth Amendment.

Paul argued that a prior presidential pardon does not rewrite history, erase documents, or prevent Congress from establishing what occurred. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had earlier suggested that new false statements could still expose Fauci to perjury risks. President Trump weighed in beforehand, saying Fauci “made too many bad calls.”

The hearing followed the release of more than 1,100 pages of Fauci’s pandemic diary. Those entries have fueled fresh debate over what officials knew and communicated while the public lived under sweeping restrictions. The origins of the virus itself remain disputed between laboratory and natural theories. Fauci’s silence left many of the central questions hanging.
