Rep. Brandon Gill Just Called for a Full Housecleaning at the Smithsonian — and He’s Not Holding Back

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) threw his full support behind President Trump’s executive order targeting alleged ideological bias at the Smithsonian and called for museum officials to be fired.

Speaking on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” Gill praised Trump for taking the issue seriously. “This is the first time, I think, that we’ve had a president who takes this stuff seriously, who doesn’t just look the other way and allow the left to continue their long march through the institutions,” he said.

Trump’s order directs officials to install signs outside the National Museum of American History notifying visitors that exhibits should be renovated consistent with a White House report criticizing the museum’s portrayal of American history. It also calls for temporary exhibits or signage that correct inaccurate information.

Gill specifically called for National Museum of American History Director Anthea Hartig to be fired. “The American people are so sick of seeing the left take control of iconic American institutions,” he said. “They want to see a museum that’s funded by taxpayers that is promoting patriotism… and instead they get this kind of woke nonsense.”

Hartig has defended the museum, saying it does not take sides in political debates and that examining harder chapters of history is not hostility toward America. Gill and other Republicans argue the institution has prioritized social-justice framing over a shared national story.

The controversy stems from the White House’s “Saving America’s Story” report, which claimed museum leadership views American history as a tool for radical transformation rather than a shared inheritance.
