Leavitt subsequently joined Trump's first administration, serving as a presidential writer and assistant press secretary. Those positions gave her experience preparing communications for the executive branch and working alongside senior officials responsible for representing the president's policies to the American public.
Following Trump's departure from office in January 2021, she continued building her political career rather than leaving Republican politics. She became communications director for Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, who was serving as chair of the House Republican Conference, placing Leavitt in a prominent congressional communications role.
