CNN Admits Polling Shows GOP Will Hold Senate

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten used a segment on “CNN News Central” to argue that Republicans have a history of beating their September polls in three states that could decide Senate control.
He focused on Ohio, Iowa and Michigan. In those states, he said, the GOP has outperformed late-summer surveys by enough to wipe out Democratic leads if the pattern repeats.
Enten put the caution in one line: “And, you know, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me four times, I just have to ask the question, could it happen again?”
The 2024 numbers he cited were large. Republicans ran 9 points ahead of September polling in Iowa, 6 points ahead in Ohio and 5 points ahead in Michigan.
The same states showed the gap in the 2018 midterms. Republicans beat September surveys by 6 points in Iowa, 6 in Ohio and 8 in Michigan.

Enten then mapped the pattern onto the current map. If Republicans win Ohio, Iowa and Michigan, he said, the Senate lands at 50–50 even if Democrats take Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and Alaska.
In that tie, Vice President JD Vance would cast the deciding vote and leave Republicans in control.
The segment treated the polling miss as a recurring problem for Democrats, not a one-cycle fluke. Enten’s point was that encouraging September numbers in those three states have not reliably become November results.
