AOC Invokes God, Speaks from Pulpit at Catholic Church

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently spoke at National Baptist Convention, which was held at All Saints Church on the east side of Syracuse, New York. She invoked God, saying, “I have been amazed watching how God works” in advancing progressive politics. She said a “miracle” occurred once she and Bernie Sanders toured deep-red areas.

“We said we must have the faith of a mustard seed. We must organize anyway,” she said.

The appearance was aimed at turning out voters before the midterms and at praising local resistance to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

She pointed to a community effort that secured the release of two people ICE had detained.

“The power of community organizing and coming together to ensure that when this community stood up to ICE, we’ve been able to protect our community and keep us together,” she said.

She warned that “cynics” want to “demobilize a people’s movement” with “cynical narratives from the right, that we are divided, to make us turn against our immigrant brothers and sisters, our trans brothers and sisters and neighbors and siblings, and divide us along every line imaginable.”

She did not separate legal immigrants from people in the country illegally. A sign inside the church said immigrants and refugees were welcome.

Ocasio-Cortez also told the crowd Democrats “cannot take our House seats for granted.”

She framed the work as more than flipping conservatives: “The goal here is not just persuasion from conservative voters, but electorate expansion.”

The same church held a “pride mass” over the summer. The rainbow was called a “beautiful” symbol of God’s diversity, a rainbow flag was displayed, and people in the pews clapped.

This was not her first church stop.

In September she addressed the National Baptist Convention in Orlando and used scriptural language for the same politics.

“We said we must have the faith of a mustard seed. We must organize anyway,” she said, adding that she had been “amazed watching how God works” as progressive causes advanced.

No named host or inviting group was identified for the Syracuse event.

The report did not include direct reactions from church officials or from critics of the appearance.
