New research has led to the development of a groundbreaking video camera system that replicates how various animals see the world with over 92 percent accuracy.

This technology not only benefits filmmakers but also provides scientists with a tool to understand animal communication and navigation.

By combining multispectral imaging with 3D digital modeling, researchers can now study animal color perception under various simulated conditions.

“We’ve long been fascinated by how animals see the world. Modern techniques in sensory ecology allow us to infer how static scenes might appear to an animal; however, animals often make crucial decisions on moving targets (e.g., detecting food items, evaluating a potential mate’s display, etc.),” George Mason University Assistant Professor Daniel Hanley said.

The camera records videos across four color channels and processes the footage to match the color perception of specific animals, making the system both scientifically precise and practical for wider research use.

“Here, we introduce hardware and software tools for ecologists and filmmakers that can capture and display animal-perceived colors in motion,” Hanley said.
