Oregon Democrats are planning to introduce a new bill to reverse part of the state’s drug decriminalization law, which has faced declining popularity since its implementation.
Measure 110, approved by voters in 2020, eliminated criminal charges for possessing small amounts of any drug.
However, the law has become increasingly unpopular, with over 60% of voters believing it has worsened drug addiction, homelessness, and crime in Oregon.
Fatal drug overdoses in the state have also increased.
The proposed bill would reintroduce misdemeanor penalties for drug possession in public places and establish stronger sentences for drug dealing near certain locations, while also increasing access to treatment and support services.
The move is described as a compromise to ensure community safety and save lives, according to state Senator Kate Lieber.
