Kamala Harris urged Black voters to support Democrats in the 2024 election, warning of threats to US democracy from Republicans and the potential backing of Donald Trump.
Speaking at an NAACP event in South Carolina, she highlighted concerns about freedom, citing issues such as the overturning of Roe v Wade, voting lines, book bans, and gun violence.
The state, influential in the Democratic presidential primary, is witnessing economic anxiety and policy disappointments, with some Black voters expressing dissatisfaction.

Harris also criticized Republican contender Nikki Haley and addressed dissent over the Biden administration’s support for Israel.
“Freedom is never truly won. You earn it and win it in every generation,” Harris said. “We were born for a time such as this.”
“Today we are witnessing a full on attack on hard-fought, hard-won freedoms.”
“They even tried to erase, overlook and rewrite the ugly parts of our past,” Harris added.
Notably, a former Biden-Harris aide’s critique of Harris’s political skills and staff morale issues have drawn attention from critics.
“A lot of us, at least folks that I was friends with on the campaign, all realised that: ‘Yeah, this person should not be president of the United States”, the anonymous aide noted.
“Harris saw heavy staff turnover, with aides describing a toxic climate riven with factionalism and mismanagement. One source who worked for the vice-president declined to go on record or even discuss matters anonymously, due to the heated atmosphere around the office,” authors Hunter Walker and Luppe B. Luppen wrote. “It was, they said: ‘Game of Thrones’.”
Meanwhile, President Biden marked the holiday by volunteering and commented on his decision to seek re-election, citing Trump’s rhetoric as a motivating factor.
