Transgender activist Morgane Oger was honored with the Meritorious Service Medal by Canada for championing diversity, despite previous involvement in defunding a rape shelter.

Oger’s efforts were recognized for furthering legal protections for transgender Canadians, forging alliances, and propelling legislative changes.

The delay in receiving the award remains unclear. (Trending: Ex-Marine Imprisoned In Russia Sends Message To Biden)

Oger’s past involvement in an effort to defund a rape shelter due to its refusal to shelter transgender women stirred controversy, leading to the withdrawal of city funding and debates around inclusivity.

“[Oger] forged alliances across party lines that propelled changes to provincial and federal legislation protecting individuals against discrimination based on gender identity or expression,” the award citation stated.

“Her courage, vision and perseverance have helped redefine the fundamental issue of equality and have advanced inclusiveness for gender-diverse Canadians.”

“It feels really, really, really nice. We don’t live in a day and age where medals come about very often, and the campaign to bring equality still has a lot of road ahead of us,” Oger said.
