The rise of both right-leaning and left-leaning populism is a significant concern, with left-leaning populists often overlooked despite their radical views.
Populism, regardless of ideology, blames societal issues on out-of-touch elites and claims to represent the “real people.”
While right-leaning populism has received attention, left-leaning populists like Ireland’s Sinn Fein and France’s La France Insoumise hold radical views on foreign and economic policy, including support for Hamas and Russia. (Trending: Donald Trump Confronts Bud Light CEO)
The emergence of leftist populism in Germany and the disparity in media coverage between left and right-leaning populists are a concern.
According to The Telegraph, “Leftist populism is even gaining momentum in Europe’s most powerful country, Germany.
“A former leader of Die Linke, a party that grew out of East Germany’s ruling Socialist Unity Party, Sahra Wagenknecht, has recently formed a new political party,” explained the outlet.
“This new entity combines far-left economics with the anti-immigrant and anti-green policies of the right-populist Alternative for Germany (AfD in German), reported The Telegraph.
“Like AfD, Wagenknecht’s new party also opposes German support for Ukraine and wants a rapprochement with Russia. Polls show it would win 14 per cent in the next election, surpassing the Greens and on the heels of the Social Democrats to become Germany’s largest party on the left,” warned the author.
Conservatives may feel a need to address the growing threat of leftist populism and calls for attention to be given to their views and actions.
“Wagenknecht’s emergence demonstrates the clear double standard that often applies to coverage of leftist populist leaders and parties,” alleged The Telegraph.
“Her old party was formed by former East German Communists, and she herself was a member of that party before the fall of the Berlin Wall,” continued the article.
Concluding, “Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s membership in a party that traces its lineage to post-fascist parties is still noted in media coverage. Wagenknecht’s past Communism, like Sinn Fein’s terrorist past, is often glided over or ignored. Why the difference?”
