The Massachusetts House has passed a comprehensive gun bill aimed at tightening firearm laws, including cracking down on unregistered “ghost guns” and strengthening the state’s assault-style weapons ban.
The bill now awaits the Senate’s version before it can become law.
The bill would also prohibit carrying a gun into someone’s home without permission and require serialized registration of key gun components. (Poll: Is the U.S. Heading in the Right Direction? VOTE)
It expands the state’s ban on assault weapons, prohibits carrying firearms in certain locations, and creates an enhanced system to track firearms used in crimes.
Gun owners opposed to the bill argue that it targets lawful gun owners rather than reducing crime.
Supporters believe it addresses gaps in the state’s gun laws and responds to a Supreme Court ruling.
The 125-page bill is considered a priority for Democratic Massachusetts House Speaker Ronald Mariano.
Massachusetts is already has tough gun laws. The state had 3.4 deaths per 100,000 people in 2021. (Trending: US Forces Attacked By Suicide Drones)
Gun owners opposed to the bill because it does more to target gun owners than to reduce crime.
“All of it goes against us, the lawful people. There’s nothing in there that goes after the criminals,” said Jim Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owners’ Action League.
“This is a tantrum. This is a flat-out tantrum,” he said.
Supporters of the bill say it will help address holes in the state’s gun laws, while also responding to the Supreme Court ruling.
Jennifer Robinson of the Massachusetts chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America said, “We believe that if you’re going to have a license for a gun, you should have live fire training, much like if you’re going to drive a car, we don’t just throw the keys at you and walk away.”
