The growth of TB in New York is the highest the city has seen in over a decade.
There is speculation that the massive influx of illegal immigrants swarming the city’s streets is contributing to the rise in cases. There are confirmed cases of migrants testing positive for tuberculosis at the southern border.
There are over 100,000 illegal immigrants who have recently been transported to NYC.
TB is among the leading killers throughout the world, especially in underdeveloped countries.
The city has not yet announced any effort to mitigate the rise of cases.
“When there are particularly high spikes in TB and other infectious diseases in New York City, that tends to be kind of a bellwether for the rest of the country,” Elizabeth Lovinger, a Treatment Action Group director stated.
