Israel was hit in several locations by more than 2,000 rockets.
The attack also occurred roughly one month after Biden approved the release of $6 billion to Iran in exchange for imprisoned Americans. Iran funds Hamas and provides arms as a state sponsor of terrorism in the region.
At the time, former President Donald Trump warned that giving cash would incentivize terrorists to take more hostages for “ransom.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged some American citizens are among the hostages.
“Any American anywhere, who’s being detained and held hostage, that is going to be a priority for this government, for this administration, and for me.”
“But I don’t want to get ahead of where we are. We have reports; we need to verify them.”
A Holocaust survivor is reportedly among the hostages taken to Gaza by Hamas.
