One final act of disrespect was given by former U.S. Women’s National Team captain Megan Rapinoe during her final game with the USWNT, where she denied the opportunity to take part in the national anthem before the game.
National anthems for both the U.S. and South African teams were played leading up to the game’s start.

Rapinoe’s rejection of the anthem originally began in 2019.
“I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again,” Rapinoe stated.
She also said that she is “a walking protest when it comes to the Trump administration” due to “everything I stand for. (Trending: Thanks to Biden, America Is Speeding Toward Great Depression)
“I feel like it’s kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it,” Rapinoe added.
“Because I’m as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don’t get to tell me if I can be here or not. So it’s kind of a good ‘F you’ to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the [Trump] administration might have towards people who don’t look exactly like him.”

The former USWNT captain originally began the protest as a way to support ex-backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest during his time with the NFL.
Rapinoe said “it would take a lot” to put an end to her defiance.
“It would take criminal justice reform. It would take the huge inequality gap that we have to be much better. It would take a lot of progress in LGBTQ rights. We have such a disparity in this country in so many different ways, inequality in so many different ways.”
