Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Wednesday that Cuba’s former dictator Raúl Castro and five co-defendants have been indicted on charges including conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, destruction of aircraft, and four counts of murder.
The charges stem from the February 24, 1996, shootdown of two Brothers to the Rescue civilian planes over international waters, killing four American pilots: Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales.
“My message today is clear: the United States and President Trump does not — and will not — forget its citizens,” Blanche said in Miami.
“If you kill Americans, we will pursue you, no matter who you are… or how much time has passed.”
The indictment was unsealed on Cuba’s Independence Day, May 20.
It marks the first time senior members of the Castro regime have faced U.S. charges for the deaths of American citizens.
