President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium must be surrendered immediately to the United States for destruction or eliminated inside Iran under joint supervision.
“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event,” Trump wrote.
The president’s post follows a New York Times report published Saturday citing two U.S. officials who said Tehran has committed in broad terms to surrendering its near-weapons-grade uranium stockpile — a core demand of the Trump administration’s pressure campaign against Iran.
The development was described as a potential breakthrough after Iranian negotiators had previously tried to separate the uranium issue from an initial ceasefire framework and push it to future talks.
The apparent concession comes despite conflicting signals from Tehran.
On Thursday, two senior Iranian sources told Reuters that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei directed that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile “should not leave the country.”
