Tim Walz Accused of Fueling Minnesota’s Massive Fraud Explosion And Covering It Up

Minnesota’s Democratic leaders are under fire once again — and this time, a new congressional investigation is accusing Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison of knowing about widespread fraud in state social services programs for years while doing little to stop it.

On March 4, 2026, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee released its interim staff report titled “The Cost of Doing Nothing: How Tim Walz and Keith Ellison Fueled Minnesota’s Fraud Explosion.” The document, based on interviews with current and former state employees plus internal records, claims the pair was briefed on credible fraud concerns as early as 2019 but delayed or avoided meaningful action.

The scale of the alleged theft is staggering. One of the biggest examples is the notorious Feeding Our Future scandal, where fraudsters reportedly stole around $250–300 million in federal child nutrition dollars during the COVID-19 pandemic through fake sites and phony claims for meals that were never served. But the report says the problems stretch far beyond that single case. Federal estimates suggest fraud across Minnesota’s Medicaid and other social programs could total $9 billion or more.

According to the committee, Minnesota officials had the legal power to halt suspicious payments but chose to keep the money flowing anyway. The report directly disputes claims from Walz’s office that courts or federal authorities forced the state to continue sending checks. Investigators found no such requirement existed — the state kept paying voluntarily.

Even more troubling are the allegations about how whistleblowers were treated. Employees who raised red flags reportedly faced retaliation, including pressure to stay quiet over fears of being labeled racist or Islamophobic, especially regarding fraud networks tied to certain communities in Minnesota. Instead of protecting those sounding the alarm, the report says the administration may have used private investigators or legal tactics to silence internal dissent.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) put it bluntly: the evidence shows Walz and Ellison were aware of the fraud, misled the public about their knowledge, and prioritized politics over protecting taxpayer dollars.

The report landed just hours before Walz and Ellison were scheduled to testify before the committee in Washington, D.C. — timing that has only added to the drama.

Governor Walz has pushed back hard, arguing his administration has spent years actively fighting fraud and that the Republican-led probe is a politically motivated attack designed to undermine important social programs. He maintains the state has focused on cracking down on bad actors while supporting families who rely on these services.

Still, the findings build on earlier red flags, including a 2024 state legislative audit that slammed the Minnesota Department of Education’s oversight of programs like Feeding Our Future as woefully inadequate.

For conservatives, this story is a textbook case of what happens when big government spending explodes without real accountability. Pandemic-era programs were rushed out with relaxed rules, creating a perfect storm for waste and abuse. When political fears — whether about optics, community backlash, or bad press — get in the way of basic oversight, it’s everyday taxpayers who get stuck with the bill.

Minnesota families already dealing with high costs and taxes deserve to know their hard-earned dollars weren’t funneled into elaborate scams instead of actually helping kids, the disabled, or those in need. This isn’t just a Minnesota problem — it’s a national warning about the dangers of unchecked bureaucracy and the importance of strong anti-fraud guardrails.

The House Oversight Committee says its investigation is far from over. With fresh scrutiny coming from Washington and a national focus on rooting out government waste, more details and potential consequences could be on the way.
