Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday pushed back against Indian concerns over President Trumpโs tightened immigration policies, which could restrict H-1B, F-1 student, and other visas heavily used by Indians.
Speaking in India, Rubio stressed that U.S. immigration policy must prioritize American national interests.
He acknowledged Indian contributions to the U.S. economy but said current reforms are global in scope and aim for a more stable, sustainable system after years of high illegal immigration.
Rubio described the changes as a necessary modernization, noting temporary disruptions are expected during the transition. Roughly 5 million Indians currently live in the United States.
