Iran is alarmed by Somaliland’s growing ties with the U.S. and Israel, viewing the breakaway African state as a potential Western base that could counter Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has been recognized by Israel and is offering its strategic port and airbase for U.S. military access, including missile storage.

Experts say this threatens Iran’s regional leverage via its Houthi proxies.

The U.S. has stepped up counterterrorism cooperation with Somaliland, though it officially partners with Somalia.

Sen. Ted Cruz is advocating full U.S. recognition.
