Report: Trump to Use ‘Tremendous Powers’ of Insurrection Act to Fight Illegal Immigration

President Donald Trump may have found a new method to deal with the illegal immigration crisis at the border.

Multiple senior officials are saying that he wants to employ the “tremendous powers” of the Insurrection Act to aid in dealing with illegal aliens.

From Washington Examiner:

The Insurrection Act of 1807 gives the president authority to use the military to fight “unlawful obstruction or rebellion” within the U.S.

An official said the president will potentially declare the U.S. as full and say the country cannot accept any more illegal immigrants.

“If you take a ship and it holds 1,000 people maximum — one more person and the ship is going to collapse,” the official said. “The country is full.”

“Our hospitals are full, our detention centers are full,” the official added.

Democrats will likely challenge any such effort to try to solve the issue with a court challenge, just as they’ve done with prior Trump action. But Trump prevailed in that case, noted one official, and it was found constitutional.

George H.W. Bush was the last president to use the law, during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Dwight D. Eisenhower used it during his presidency to desegregate schools in the South.

Illegal immigration has hit record highs with over 100,000 illegal aliens entering in each of the past two months.

Because facilities are overloaded, they’ve had to just release people straight into the communities.

From Daily Caller:

ICE facilities were forced to release 100,000 illegal immigrants in the first three months of 2019 because of overcrowding in detention centers.

Separately, the president unveiled a new immigration plan Thursday that focuses on border security and merit-based legal immigration. The plan, which was co-authored by top aides Jared Kushner and Stephen Miller, would increase the proportion of visas granted to highly-skilled immigrants and also establish a self-sustaining border security fund.

Meanwhile Trump has moved more troops to the border to help out in support roles and he’s moved more funding to help build the wall.

Now it’s not clear how the Insurrection Act would be employed if they actually used it. And there’s a conflicting report from OANN saying that a senior official in the administration is denying it. But there’s no doubt that it would trigger those on the left. And also no doubt that they can use all the help they can get in the effort to deal with the problem.
