WATCH: Mayor De Blasio enters 2020 presidential race
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has officially announced that he will be joining an already unprecedented large number of Democratic presidential candidates in seeking their party’s nomination to take on President Trump.
Trump, who historically beat Hillary Clinton in 2016, now faces down the largest group of Democrats ever to run for the presidency.
De Blasio has been a frequent critic of President Trump and announced his intention to replace him in the White House on Thursday.
“Right now, the federal government is not on the side of working people. And that’s because Donald Trump is playing a big con on America,” de Blasio said on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” as the Hill reports.
“I call him Con Don. Every New Yorker knows he’s a con artist. We know his tricks. We know his playbook,” the mayor added. “I know how to take him on — I’ve been watching him for decades. He’s trying to convince working Americans he’s on their side. It’s been a lie from day one.”
The mayor, who is barred from seeking a third four-year term in 2021, emerged in 2013 as a leading voice for the burgeoning left wing that has reshaped his party. But he has struggled in the intervening years to build a national profile, and his approval ratings at home have waned after several political setbacks.
De Blasio will release a video announcing his run before appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He is scheduled to travel to the early-voting states of Iowa and South Carolina this weekend to begin campaigning.
The mayor plans to emphasize his record of progressive accomplishments, including universal pre-kindergarten, a $15 minimum wage and paid sick leave – all in a city that has a bigger population, more than 8 million, than most U.S. states.
But de Blasio faces an uphill battle to stand out among nearly two dozen Democratic contenders, who include former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and liberal icons like U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
President Trump responded to the announcement, calling de Blasio “the worst mayor in the U.S.”
“The Dems are getting another beauty to join their group,” Trump tweeted. “Bill de Blasio of NYC, considered the worst mayor in the U.S., will supposedly be making an announcement for president today. He is a JOKE, but if you like high taxes & crime, he’s your man. NYC HATES HIM!”
Fellow conservatives dunked on de Blasio via Twitter:
De Blasio is now the 24th Democrat to declare a run in 2020.
