Beto O’Rourke: Border Walls ‘Contribute to Death And Suffering’

WATCH: Beto O’Rourke says walls ‘contribute to death and suffering’ to asylum seekers

Beto O’Rourke told his supporters that if President Trump and the United States were to construct a wall along the southern border that it would “contribute to death and suffering.”

The former Texas congressman made the comments on “The View” where he said he does not agree with how Trump is prioritizing the border and using it to crack down on illegal immigration.

“No one cares more about border security than those of us who live there. But when we think about those who made that 2,000-mile journey, fleeing the deadliest countries on the face of the planet, doing what we would all do faced with the same decision, no wall, no militarization, no cages, no cruelty is going to address that,” O’Rourke said via the Washington Examiner.

Conservative host Meghan McCain pressed the Democrat on how far he would take his “no border wall” mantra.

“Do you think we are a nation of borders, though?” McCain asked.

“Yes, we are a nation of laws. That border must be respected,” O’Rourke responded, before arguing against a physical border. “Not only do those walls not manage the situation, they also contribute to death and suffering. Thousands of immigrants and asylum-seekers have died as we have built out more walls and fences, pushing them to even more remote stretches of the U.S.-Mexico border.”

Watch:

This is not the first time O’Rourke has protested the U.S.-Mexico border wall and Trump’s plan to construct a larger, more efficient one.

As the Washington Examiner also reports, O’Rourke told MSNBC in February that he would be ok with tearing down the walls currently in place.

During the February interview, the Texas Democrat claimed that a border wall forces migrants seeking entry into the United States to go to extreme lengths to cross into the country: “It has pushed asylum seekers, migrants and refugees to hostile, the most inhospitable stretches of the U.S.-Mexico border, ensuring their suffering and death.”
