Al Green Ousted — Shockwaves Sent Through Party

Rep. Al Green, a longtime Democratic congressman and one of President Donald Trump’s most vocal critics on Capitol Hill, was defeated Tuesday in a bruising runoff election in Texas’ 18th Congressional District.

Green lost to fellow Democrat Rep. Christian Menefee after new district maps drawn through Texas redistricting forced the two incumbents into the same heavily Democratic Houston-area seat.

Menefee had edged out Green in the March primary with 46% to 44.2%, forcing the runoff.

Green, who rose to national prominence for repeatedly pushing impeachment efforts against Trump and protesting during State of the Union addresses, expressed frustration after the initial primary, citing $1.5 million in spending against him by the crypto industry and questioning Menefee’s congressional attendance record.

Menefee, a former commercial litigation lawyer from a military family, campaigned on bringing fresh energy to the district and positioning himself as a more effective counter to Trump and national Republicans.

With the victory, Menefee becomes the heavy favorite to win the deep-blue 18th District in November against Republican Ronald Whitfield.

The seat has long been a Democratic stronghold, meaning Menefee is almost certain to succeed Green in Congress.
