Elon Musk Rejoins Trump Admin with Official Role

Elon Musk is returning to a prominent role in the Trump administration as part of a new Pentagon effort focused on the future of American warfare. War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday that Musk will help lead Project Meridian, a 120-day initiative designed to examine emerging military technologies and determine what capabilities American forces may need in future conflicts.

Musk will work alongside Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The project will operate under the direction of War Department Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael. Hegseth said the Pentagon wants perspectives from outside the traditional military establishment as it attempts to anticipate how warfare could change over the coming decades.

“The best forecasters of future conflict do not solely reside inside the Pentagon,” Hegseth said. He added that relying exclusively on Pentagon officials to identify future threats could create “obvious biases and risks.”

Project Meridian is expected to begin immediately and will have approximately four months to complete its initial work. According to Hegseth, the group will “ruthlessly map the trajectory of wars, domains and technologies.”

Its conclusions are expected to include both publicly released findings and a separate classified report. The project’s scope is deliberately broad, examining potential areas of conflict stretching, in Hegseth’s words, “from under the Earth to beyond the moon.”

Rather than writing specific military strategies, the group will focus on identifying technologies and areas of warfare where the United States could need greater capabilities. The initiative will look at what Hegseth described as “the domains that we must conquer and capabilities we must master.”

Musk brings extensive experience working with the federal government through SpaceX, which has secured major contracts involving military launches, satellites and other national-security projects.

Luckey also has significant ties to the defense industry through Anduril, the military technology company he founded that develops autonomous systems and other advanced equipment.

Their involvement gives the project access to leaders deeply involved in emerging technologies, although their business relationships with the Pentagon could also prompt questions about potential conflicts of interest.

Project Meridian is only one piece of a broader Pentagon effort to accelerate the military’s adoption of autonomous and robotic technology.

Hegseth also announced the creation of Autonomous Warfare Command, referred to as AUTOWARCOM, which will focus on expanding autonomous capabilities throughout the armed forces.

The Pentagon also plans to establish new career paths for service members specializing in autonomous warfare and related technologies.

“We should have been thinking about Autonomous Warfare Command ten years ago,” Hegseth said.

He argued that the military needs to anticipate major technological changes before adversaries gain an advantage rather than responding after those changes have already transformed warfare.

The announcements came during Hegseth’s State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.

Unlike his previous address to senior generals and admirals, Hegseth spoke this year to a younger group of military personnel that included high-performing enlisted members and officers.

He described them as the military’s “current and future leaders on the front lines.”

Altogether, Hegseth unveiled six initiatives aimed at changing how the U.S. military approaches technology, personnel, supply chains and future conflicts.

His remarks also included a broader message about the culture he wants to establish throughout the armed forces.

“We are no longer the woke department or the weak department,” Hegseth said.

The new initiatives signal an effort by Pentagon leadership to place autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and emerging technology closer to the center of long-term American military planning.

For Musk, Project Meridian represents another high-profile assignment inside the Trump administration following his earlier leadership role with the Department of Government Efficiency.
