Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum advised President-elect Donald Trump against implementing tariffs concerning immigration and drug trafficking, warning that this could trigger retaliatory tariffs from Mexico.
Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s efforts to manage asylum seekers and reduce illegal crossings, noting a decrease in encounters reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
She also highlighted Mexico’s successes in drug seizures and urged the U.S. to invest in addressing the root causes of migration instead of resorting to tariffs.
“A tariff will be met with another tariff in response and so forth until we place common companies at risk,” Claudia Sheinbaum said.
“Half of the migrants are doing so through the application CBP One,” she said referring to the number of migrants who ask for travel permits.
