Vice President Kamala Harris has come under heavy scrutiny for her response to a question regarding her tax plans during a CNN town hall with Anderson Cooper. Harris claimed that “there is going to be a parity around what the richest people pay in terms of their taxes.”
Parity refers to the state of being equal or equivalent in terms of status, value, or quantity. A “parity in tax rates” means that the tax rates for different groups or individuals are equivalent to one another, rather than one group being taxed at a higher or lower rate than others.
“Right now, Anderson, you know … it is well documented that some of the richest people in our country have gotten away with a zero tax rate,” Harris said.
Cooper pressed Harris for a clearer explanation on her statement, but she merely claimed the situation was “complicated.”
“But if you’re earning $500, $600, $700,000, under your plan there’s a good chance your taxes go up?” Cooper asked.
“We can’t have this conversation without knowing what the … It’s a very complicated situation,” Harris said.
The exchange sparked widespread criticism on social media, with numerous users accusing Harris of lacking substance.
“It’s a very complicated situation means, ‘I have zero clue what I’m talking about,’” one X user stated.
“She’s an imbecile and giving her the keys to the white house will destroy this country beyond recognition!” another X user wrote.
Harris’ team has not provided further clarification on her tax plan.
Former President Donald Trump has remained highly critical of Harris’ performance as vice president, citing her lack of achievement and inability to communicate her policy positions.
