Senator JD Vance of Ohio was informed that he was being named as former President Trump’s running mate approximately 20 minutes before Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform.
Trump said, “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”
“J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association,” Trump continued.
“J.D.’s book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country,” Trump said.
“J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”
“Hillbilly Elegy” became a bestseller and sparked widespread discussion about the challenges faced by white working-class communities in the United States.
It was praised for its candid portrayal of Vance’s personal experiences and for offering insights into the socio-economic issues affecting the region known as Appalachia.
Before becoming an author, Vance served in the Marine Corps and later attended Ohio State University and Yale Law School.
After law school, he worked as a lawyer and then moved into venture capital, where he became a partner at a firm in Silicon Valley.
Vance’s memoir was adapted into a film of the same name directed by Ron Howard, which was released on Netflix in 2020.
The book and film have both been praised and criticized for their portrayal of poverty, addiction, and the complexities of social and economic issues in America.
