NYT Poll Spells Problems For Biden

via PBS

A new poll from The New York Times and Siena College showed serious problems for President Biden’s reelection prospects, with most respondents saying the country was headed in the wrong direction under his leadership and preferring Trump in a 2024 matchup.

Biden trailed Trump in support from white, Latino, and some younger voters. Only a minority said Biden’s policies helped them, while more saw benefit from Trump’s.

Biden had weak approval ratings, and Democrats were split on renominating him.

The Biden campaign dismissed the poll, claiming surveys overestimate Trump and underestimate Biden compared to actual voting behavior, and that Democrats continue outperforming despite divisions among Republicans.

“Polling continues to be at odds with how Americans vote, and consistently overestimates Donald Trump while underestimating President Biden,” Biden Campaign Communications Director Michael Tyler said. “Whether it’s in special elections or in the presidential primaries, actual voter behavior tells us a lot more than any poll does and it tells a very clear story: Joe Biden and Democrats continue to outperform while Donald Trump and the party he leads are weak, cash-strapped, and deeply divided. Our campaign is ignoring the noise and running a strong campaign to win – just like we did in 2020.”

However, the poll painted a dire picture of Biden’s standing with the electorate just over two years before the next election.
