The Fairfax County School Board in Virginia designated Easter Sunday 2024 as “Transgender Visibility Day,” sparking Christian criticism that it hijacks one of their holiest days.
The board has already designated June as LGBT Pride Month and October as LGBT History Month, totaling 62 days celebrating LGBT issues.
A transgender advocacy group praised the decision, but a local writer said it tells Christians they don’t matter.
The nine Democrat board members voted in favor, while the sole Republican was absent.
Democrats on the board and county supervisor expressed support, with one noting nearly half of transgender students consider suicide and it’s a “moral imperative” to address LGBT depression and suicide attempts.
“I’m looking forward to the day when we have a full dais for this proclamation, and that day will come,” advocacy group board member James Walkinshaw said. “One way or the other, that day will come.”
“What we say at this dais matters,” Democrat Dalia Palchik said. “What you say in the community, what our leaders say and the outcome of that really matters.”
“Our transgender students are depressed,” Palchik added. “Nearly half have considered suicide. You see across the board in our LGBT community that it is the one community that stands out higher than any other demographic in our students of depression, attempting suicide, considering suicide.”
“To me, it is a moral imperative and also a public health imperative that we band together,” she said.
The move was seen as politicizing a Christian holiday by those who feel it undermines church convictions.
