More Than 140 Democrats Push for Power to Prevent Veterans from Buying Guns

via Atlanta News First

More than 140 House Democrats are demanding language be added back to an appropriations bill that would allow the VA to report veterans to the national background check system (NICS) and potentially bar them from gun ownership under certain circumstances.

For decades, the VA has reported veterans deemed mentally incompetent or requiring fiduciaries to manage benefits to NICS.

However, this year a Senate amendment by Sen. John Kennedy rolled back this Clinton-era gun ban, saying unelected bureaucrats shouldn’t unilaterally strip veterans’ Second Amendment rights.

“Unelected bureaucrats shouldn’t be able to strip veterans of their Second Amendment rights unilaterally. The Senate did the right thing for veterans and all freedom-loving Americans by passing my amendment today,” Kennedy said.

In response, House Democrats led by Rep. Mike Thompson are calling for reinstating the ban, arguing the current VA competency review process ensures only veterans deemed a danger are flagged.

They maintain this protects veterans and urge the VA to use state red flag laws as well.

Democrats want this gun restriction language restored to the appropriations bill, while Republicans led by Kennedy oppose expanding the government’s ability to restrict veterans’ gun rights.
