Transgender Competitor Wins Women’s National Weightlifting Competition

via Weightlifting House

A transgender weightlifter, Vicki Piper, won the women’s 76-kilogram category at the Masters National Weightlifting Championships in Reno, Nevada.

Piper lifted 56 kilograms in the snatch and 71 kg in the clean and jerk, outperforming the second place finisher Krista Dornbush who lifted 46 kg in the snatch and 64 kg in the clean and jerk.

It was Piper’s first championship contest and Piper celebrated the win, thanking USA Weightlifting for hosting a supportive event.

“Thank you, USA Weightlifting, for hosting such a well thought out and supportive event here in Reno, Nevada,” Piper wrote.

USA Weightlifting’s rules allow transgender athletes to compete if they have undergone two years of hormone therapy to minimize advantages related to gender.

Videos showed Piper easily performing lifts while towering over opponents on the winner’s platform.
