Texas Border Town Mayor, School Board President Face Drug Charges

via NK USA

The mayor of Progreso, Texas, Gerardo “Jerry” Alanis, was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations on drug trafficking charges.

His brother Francisco “Frank” Alanis, the former school board president and city manager, faces similar charges from an arrest last year.

They are among seven individuals named in an indictment accusing them of possessing and distributing large amounts of cocaine.

The case originated from the 2020 arrest of a school bus driver found with 30kg of cocaine, who then cooperated with authorities.

This led to the Alanis brothers, who have held political power in Progreso for over a decade after another family previously controlled the city and school board until FBI arrests in 2014.

The brothers made local news in 2021 when they were detained for crossing from Mexico intoxicated and confrontational with officers.

While most details were avoided, the summary focuses on the key people involved, their political roles, the origins of the investigation, and its implications for corruption in local government.
