NY Spends $53M on Debit Cards for Migrants Despite 56% of Residents Living Near Poverty Line

via FOX

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is spending $53 million in taxpayer funds to provide prepaid debit cards to families of undocumented immigrants housed in hotels.

This pilot program will give families of four about $35 per day or $1,000 per month to use however they like.

Adams claims this saves money, but critics argue it incentivizes more border crossings.

At the same time, a new study found that 1 in 4 NYC children live in poverty, and 56% of residents live near the poverty line.

From 2021-2022, the number of New Yorkers in poverty increased by 500,000 – the largest rise in 12 years.

As conditions become easier for undocumented immigrants with free housing and soon debit cards, native New Yorkers are struggling more to afford rising costs of living in the city.
