Long COVID Study Suggests Immune System Response At Root Of Persistent Symptoms

via Sky News

Scientists have identified a change in blood proteins in people with long COVID symptoms, suggesting that their immune systems remain active after the infection.

This discovery could lead to diagnostic tests and treatments for long COVID, which causes persistent fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms.

The study focused on 113 COVID patients and found that the body’s complement system, a part of the immune system, remained active long after the virus, potentially causing tissue damage and reduced oxygen delivery to organs.

“If your brain, for example, isn’t getting enough oxygen, obviously there will be a lot of issues with memory, brain fog and fatigue,” Yale professor Akiko Iwasaki stated.

Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing treatments for long COVID, which affects around 14% of adults.

“Understanding the mechanisms of long COVID is how we’re going to figure out treatments,” Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez said.
