Former President Donald Trump is predicted to win against former Gov. Nikki Haley in New Hampshire, according to Gov. Chris Sununu.
This marks a significant shift from previous statements where Sununu expressed strong expectations of Haley defeating Trump.
Despite significant support from the donor class and anti-Trump PACs, polling does not favor a Haley victory.
“Nikki Haley can … give Trump that defeat that no one thought was possible in the next few weeks. And I think that’s very likely to happen,” Sununu said previously.
“Oh, it’s an absolute win… If everyone that could vote in the primary comes out and votes, she’s going to win in a landslide. And that’s not an exaggeration,” he said.
“I think she wins here in New Hampshire,” he added later.
“We always wanted to have a strong second. That’s the only expectation we ever laid out there,” Sununu said.
Recent tracking polls indicate Trump leading by more than ten points.
Some political experts have noted that Haley’s campaign appears to be treating New Hampshire as less significant, with canceled debates and a focus on Super Tuesday states, leading to doubts about her seriousness in winning the primary.
“She is behind,” Republican strategist Michael Biundo said. “And to cancel on debates, and to treat New Hampshire like it’s not the first in the nation and it’s just one of the Super Tuesday states — which is what she’s treating it like — I think is a huge mistake. We have a different way of thinking here.”
“Seems like Haley has given up,” Sean Van Anglen said.
