Ohio Gov. Signs Executive Order Due To ‘Broad Consensus Against Surgeries For Minors’

via WKYC Channel 3

Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio signed an executive order banning transgender surgeries on minors, following criticism for vetoing a bill that would have prohibited all transgender procedures on children.

The state House of Representatives is expected to vote to override the veto of the bill.

DeWine’s order instructs the Ohio Department of Health to create rules prohibiting gender transition surgeries on minors and setting quality standards for hospitals and facilities treating gender-related conditions. “There’s a broad, broad consensus against surgeries for minors, so let’s put that into a law so we can move on and talk about other things,” DeWine said.

However, the primary sponsor of the vetoed bill expressed dissatisfaction with the executive order, stating that it is not a substitute for solid legislation.

”While I support his efforts as a temporary measure, I cannot accept them as a substitute for the SAFE Act,” Rep. Gary Click said.

“His suggestion that we take his measures and place them in a bill for his signature was insulting.”

“He had ample opportunity to participate in the SAFE Act and he vetoed it. There are no mulligans.”
