Iraq’s Military Condemns ‘Unprovoked’ US Drone Strike That Killed Commander

via NBC News

A U.S. drone strike in Baghdad targeted and killed a high-ranking Iraqi militia commander linked to attacks on U.S. forces.

The strike, confirmed by a U.S. official, aimed at a leader of the Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, an Iraqi Shi’ite military group.

The militia has ties to Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). (Trending: Trump Announces Heartbreaking Melania-Related Health Update)

The PMF condemned the strike, and six others were wounded.

A U.S. military official wrote in a statement, “The United States is continuing to take action to protect our forces in Iraq and Syria by addressing the threats they face.”

The Iraqi military holds the International Coalition Forces responsible for the attack.

Iraqi military spokesman Yehia Rasool wrote, the Iraqi Army “holds the International Coalition Forces responsible for this unprovoked attack on an Iraqi security body operating in accordance with the powers granted to it by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.”

The strike occurs amidst regional tensions and Iraqi officials’ push for U.S.-led coalition forces to leave the country.

This action follows previous attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria, with concerns about escalating hostilities in the region.
