via CBS Miami

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was attacked by mortar fire, causing minor damage but no casualties.

The attack, believed to be carried out by Iran-aligned militias, targeted the heavily fortified Green Zone.

This is the first such attack on the embassy since the Israel-Hamas war began, escalating tensions in the region. (Trending: Hunter Biden Indicted on 9 New Criminal Charges)

An embassy spokesperson then confirmed the U.S. Embassy was attacked, adding, “Assessments are ongoing, but there are no reported casualties on the Embassy compound.”

“We again call on the Government of Iraq, as we have done on many occasions, to do all in its power to protect diplomatic and Coalition partner personnel and facilities,” said the spokesperson.

“We reiterate that we reserve the right to self-defense and to protect our personnel anywhere in the world,” they continued.

Iran-backed militias have claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq and Syria.

In response, U.S. forces have conducted airstrikes in both countries.

The U.S. has troops stationed in Iraq and Syria for missions against the Islamic State group.
