Elizabeth Francis becomes the oldest person in Texas | Eyewitness News via ABC

Elizabeth Francis of Houston, Texas is now the oldest person living in the state with the recent celebration of her 114th birthday.

Francis was born on July 25, 1909 in Louisiana. At the time of her birth, William Howard Taft was elected the 27th president of the United States.

She has lived through World World I, the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, and World War II, and other historic events.

“I just thank the good Lord for keeping me,” she told People Magazine. She was surround by family on her birthday, including her 94-year-old daughter, Dorothy Williams, and 68-year-old granddaughter, Ethel Harrison.

Francis wore a sparkling tiara and she was presented with a plaque.

“She always grew her vegetables in the backyard. I never saw her go to a fast food restaurant like Chick-fil-A and all the places I liked to go. She never did that,” she explained.

Her daughter said “she has been a wonderful mother and grandmother to all of us. She has been our backbone.”
