A prominent Democratic official was carjacked just outside the crime-ridden city of Chicago.
Democratic state Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford and her husband were carjacked in Broadview, Illinois, which is a suburb in the Chicago area.
“First and foremost, I am thankful that my husband and I are alive and physically unharmed,” Lightford said in a statement.
“I am trying to process the trauma of what happened. I want to thank everyone who has offered their love and support. I want to especially thank Mayor Katrina Thompson and the Broadview Police Department for their quick and thorough response.”
Within 24 hours, Democrat Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon of Pennsylvania was also carjacked and robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight, shortly before 3pm.
Both Scanlon and Lightford have been staunch supporters of police reforms in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, Fox News reports.
Scanlon was forced to hand over her keys and belongings to armed criminals. Police say the suspect stole her government-issued cell phone, purse, and ID.
Scanlon, who previously backed the radical agenda behind the “Defund the Police” and “Black Lives Matter” movements, immediately needed desperate help from the Philadelphia Police Department.
Police say Scanlon was approached by two Black males, aged approximately 20-30 while walking to her vehicle.
They demanded that she hand them the keys. Scanlon, who is 62 years old, handed over the keys to her blue 2017 Acura MDX. One of the suspects drove away with her car while the other drove away in a dark-colored SUV.
The Philadelphia Police Department has announced the arrest of five suspects in connection with the crime.
Scanlon represents Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District, which includes part of South Philadelphia.
Crime is currently surging across the country. Philadelphia is seeing at least an 80% increase in carjackings in 2021 compared to 2020.
In 2021, the Philadelphia Police Department has reported 521 homicides, which is a 13% increase compared to the already bloody year of 2020. This is the city’s highest number of killings since at least 2007.
Below is an earlier statement from Rep. Scanlon that criticizes law enforcement for allegedly being brutal and racist.
Writing to Twitter, she said, “We have seen too many lives taken and communities devastated by police brutality and racial profiling.”
“Action is long overdue,” she claimed in June of 2020. “House Democrats are fighting for REAL reform in our country’s police departments,” she concluded.
